Tips to help improve your child's cutting with scissors.

Hold the scissors properly. Show your child how to hold the scissors in their dominant hand, with their thumb and first two fingers inserted into the corresponding holes.

The index finger should be extended along the side of the blade This grip will give them more control over the scissors.

Place the paper correctly. Place the paper on a flat surface in front of them, making sure that all four corners are touching the surface.

They should then use their non-dominant hand to hold down one corner of the paper while they cut along the other side with their dominant hand.

Use a light touch. Applying too much pressure when cutting can cause crumpling or tearing of the paper, so encourage your child to use a light touch when cutting.

Make smooth cuts. Help your child understand that they need to make smooth, uninterrupted cuts rather than sawing back and forth motions which will result in jagged edges.

Show them how to change direction mid-cut  If they need to make a turn or change direction while cutting, teach them how to do so without lifting up the scissors from the paper – this will ensure smoother, cleaner cuts.
