Some adults take for granted the skill of cutting shapes with scissors, but teaching kids how to do it can be quite challenging.

There are a few common mistakes that people make when they are trying to teach young children this important life skill.

Not starting with the basics. It's important to start with the basics when teaching any new skill and that includes cutting shapes with scissors. Begin by showing your child how to hold the scissors correctly and then move on to simple straight cuts before attempting anything more complicated.

Not being patient. Cutting shapes with scissors takes practice and patience is key when teaching kids this skill. Avoid getting frustrated if your child isn't getting it immediately and instead provide encouragement and positive reinforcement along the way.

Not providing guidance. It can be tempting to just hand over a pair of scissors and let your child figure it out on their own, but this usually isn't effective. Instead, provide step-by-step guidance as they attempt to cut different shapes so they know exactly what they need to do.

Being too critical. Again, this is a skill that takes practice so don't be too critical if your child makes some mistakes along the way.
