Why Mastering 1 More & 1 Less Matters:

Before embarking on more complex mathematical journeys, young learners need a solid foundation in understanding basic addition and subtraction concepts.

Introducing 1 more and 1 less provides a springboard for developing essential early math skills, including:

  • Number Recognition: Recognizing and identifying numbers is a crucial building block for future math success.
  • Counting: Counting skills form the basis for understanding addition and subtraction.
  • Number Relationships: Recognizing how numbers relate to each other (e.g., 3 is 1 more than 2) is a fundamental concept in early math.
  • Problem-solving: Applying 1 more and 1 less scenarios to solve simple problems encourages critical thinking.

Dino-Themed Counting Capers:

1 More 1 Less Worksheet - Dinosaur Love Themed whisks your students back to the prehistoric era, where adorable dinosaurs become their counting companions!

Adding One More with Our Dino Buddies!

Look at the numbers at the bottom of the page. These are extra numbers for our dinosaurs!

  1. Grab your scissors! Cut out the numbers at the bottom of the page (2, 6, 5, 8).
  2. Find the Matching Dino: Look for the number the dinosaur is holding.
  3. One More Number: Remember, these are extra numbers! Find the number that shows one more than the dinosaur's number.
  4. Paste the Number: Carefully paste the number that shows one more next to the number in the dinosaur's square.

Ready for a Roaring Challenge?

Think you've mastered 1 More & 1 Less with our dino friends?

Buckle up, paleontologists, because it's time for the next level! This challenge will test your addition and subtraction skills simultaneously.

Here's what you need to do:

Double the Trouble: Open your prehistoric eyes wide!

The scene features four pairs of playful dinosaurs. Each pair has a number displayed right in the middle between them. Pay close attention, because there are also boxes on both sides of the number for each pair.

  1. Cut It Out: Grab your scissors and carefully cut out the numbers on the right side of the page (1, 6, 5, 3, 9, 4, 3, and 7).
  2. Dino Sharing Challenge: Our Dino friends are feeling generous! Imagine each pair needs to share one of the things they have with another dinosaur. But here's the fun part - they don't just lose something, they also get a surprise! Each pair will receive one completely new thing in return for their kindness.
  3. Strategic Placement: Here's the tricky part! Use your critical thinking skills to decide which number from the pile you cut out best suits each pair of dinosaurs. You want to paste the number on the left next to their existing number so it shows they have 1 LESS of what they originally had (subtraction). Then, find another number and paste it inside the box on the right next to them that shows they gained 1 MORE new thing (addition).

For example:

  • If a pair of dinosaurs has a number 5 with them, you might paste a "4" on the left (1 less) and a "6" on the right (1 more).

Small Group Instruction: Work with small groups of students to provide targeted support and personalized attention. This allows you to adjust the pace and complexity of the activities based on the group's understanding.

Manipulatives: Incorporate manipulatives like dinosaur counters, colorful blocks, or even dinosaur figurines into the activities. The tactile experience of manipulating objects can significantly enhance learning and engagement for many students.

Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate your students' progress, no matter how small! Positive reinforcement will keep them motivated and excited to continue their prehistoric counting adventures.
